Berlin Brides

What's the meaning behind the band's name? Before the band was formed we had an idea for a short film of a plane full of women dressed as brides that would land in Berlin. The women would take to the city streets and would perform a “love attack” to unsuspecting strangers: each girl would choose a random stranger and would kiss them right then and there! This is how “Berlin Brides” came up.

How the band started?? We, Natasha Giannaraki and Marilena Orfanou, met in the summer of ’07, when a common friend called us to rehearse for a band he wanted to form. During the rehearsal we realized that we musically clicked, met again after the summer holidays, started rehearsing and making songs.

What's the message to transmit with your music?? The personal is political”. In our songs we talk about personal experiences of everyday city life, with an ironic twist. Our debut album is called “Modern Celibacy” and contains songs such as “Ballad for the Touch-Deprived”, “Bikini Wax”, “Rejection Junkie” and “Failure to Wank”.

What's your method at the time of writing a song?? Our roles are quite distinct: Natasha writes the lyrics and Marilena composes the music. When we rehearse together we match the lyrics with the music, form the structure of the song and decide on its instrumentation.

Which is your music influences?? We re influenced by the 00s electro-clash scene, 60s garage and 80s old school hip-hop. The song “Set it off” by Peaches is quite indicative of our aesthetics.

What plans do you guys have for the future?? Our debut album “Modern Celibacy” will be released on October 11th. We will play 5 shows at Indie Week Toronto on October 13-17th and we are planning a European tour in the spring. We would like to release our record in more countries and tour as much as we can!

Which has been the funniest prank you guys have been or took part while on tour or after a show?? While we were on tour in London last spring we brought a huge, heavy case for our synth to go on the plane, which looked like a coffin. So, when somebody asked us what it contained we said it was our late grandmother! Two years ago we were playing at the Thessaloniki film festival

If you guys were stranded in the middle of nowhere after a show or while on tour. The help is 65 miles away from where you guys are, ¿Who would you guys send to look for help? And if while the rest wait, there's no food and the only way to feed yourself is by eating each other, ¿Who would you eat first? We would send our guitarist to get help and would eat the drummer or vice versa!

Which country you guys would love to play? We would love to play in Japan, as we are both big sushi fans!

With which bands you guys would love to share stage??
There is a Greek band we love called ‘Katrin The Thrill”, with a very charismatic front woman, who sometimes plays guitar with us. We would like to open for Peaches at some point.

Are you guys OK, with the direction the band is going actually?
Yes, we are very happy with the way our album turned out, we are ready to start writing new songs and want to continue going to new, exciting places and meeting amazing new people.
