Research Material

What's the meaning behind the band's name? The name Research Material came about because three of us met in College. It came out of an academic mind set and that is how we still operate today. The name resonated with all of us and it just felt right.

How the band started?? The band officially started once we completed our first EP with producer Mike Daly (Plain White T's, Hey Monday). I had written close to forty songs and we picked the best four we had. We fell in love with the songs and sound and Research Material was born. We are an very new band and we have amazing hopes for the future.

What's the message to transmit with your music?? We aim to transmit positivity and perspective. I try my best to put forward a very vivid image that is connected to a powerful emotion. That's what the best songs out there achieve in my opinion, and we are a very song centered band. Our songs are a sort of sleek nostalgia if you get my meaning, we try and take people back to a time where feelings were very powerful and intense. We try and pluck those heart strings.

What's your method at the time of writting a song?? Our songs start with a single idea and the entire song is built around that idea. My method has evolved over time, but more often than not the idea for a song comes before the melody. Once I have the seed in my head I sit down and start to arrange the song in my head. The chorus usually comes first and then the verses. We give each song its own identity, but include corresponding themes throughout all our songs. I see my life as a giant story arc told through songs.

Which is your music influences?? We all have different influences, but the songs definitely come from the exhaustive study of late 60s and 70s pop. Billy Joel, Paul Simon, Jackson Browne, Cat Stevens and dudes like that. New bands we love are Say Anything, Third Eye Blind, Local Natives and The Starting Line.

What plans do you guys have for the future?? The future is wide open and glorious. The road is calling our name and we plan to answer the call. We are working tirelessly to license our new tunes to TV/film in order to fund the completion of our first record. We plan to do what we do best, and that is be in a band and rock. We love this and I can't even imagine doing anything else.

Which has been the funniest prank you guys have been or took part while on tour or after a show?? One time we tied all of Ryan's bags up in a tree. He couldn't find them for hours. There have been a few times that involved stolen fire extinguishers, but we don't condone theft. So I will leave it at that.

If you guys were stranded in the middle of nowhere after a show or while on tour. The help is 65 miles away from where you guys are, ¿Who would you guys send to look for help? And if while the rest wait, there's no food and the only way to feed yourself is by eating each other, ¿Who would you eat first? Adam would go for help and we would eat Fred first because he has got the most meat.

Which country you guys would love to play? We would love to play Mexico, and anywhere in Latin America. Ryan and I are pretty good with spanish, and I went back packing through South America a few years back and I would love to return.

With which bands you guys would love to share stage?? Billy Joel, Say Anything, Passion Pit, Mumford and Sons, Phoenix and the Mighty Mighty Bosstones. Those are just a few, there are so many amazing bands out there.

Are you guys OK, with the direction the band is going actually? Our destiny is in our hands and we control the direction. We will always do our best to write the best songs and play the best live shows we can. Music is our life force and we are all so excited about what the future holds.
